system

I make works using a system that involves weaving string together, applying a ground, and then painting upon it. This process is repeated, alternating between the making of the 'canvas' and the act of painting/drawing. I see the relation between two as a kind of interpenetration, not just of materials but processes too.
I weave the strings, apply the ground, draw the patterns, and observe.
The system is formed by repeating these four acts.

interpenetration

Each act has many variables: length of string, width and height of steps, density of pigments, length of drawing in lines, etc. The system operates organically as intuitive adjustments are constantly being made. Certain things such as finding the right consistency of ground to work upon are unclear until after it has been applied, so there is a lot of trial and error in the process. The drawing is continuously altered according to aesthetics and a pre-determined pattern.
The drawing for the ground. The ground for the drawing.
These acts are simultaneously independent of each other and yet interactive. The result is a system of interpenetration.

Drift of learning

The works constantly change due to both the system and my own choices, causing the painting to take shape in a form that cannot not be anticipated. Formal decisions that are deemed to be good are repeated, thus giving reinforcing the method and then repeated further. Of course repetition can also be monotonous, but the method ensures repetitive/bad decisions are phased out, allowing a kind of 'drift of learning' to develop.
